Mid-Missouri has endured cold weather this winter with temperatures dropping close to zero degrees the last week of December. And while people can layer up with scarves, mittens and coats, livestock lack that luxury.

Ben Potter, an associate veterinarian with Howard County Veterinary Services in Fayette, said livestock that are not cared for properly in cold weather can later have issues with breeding back and overall quality of life.

The Missouri Department of Conservation and the city of Columbia can help.

“After the holiday season is through, why not give one more gift — to nature — by recycling your Christmas tree?” said Lucas Bond, services coordinator for the department.
