While AGS is often referred to as a red meat allergy, it's more accurately described as an allergy to galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal), a sugar molecule found in mammals, animal-derived products and some non-mammalian organisms, including red algae. As a result, ingredients derived from these organisms, such as carrageenan, can trigger reactions in people living with AGS.
